Biomix is an innovative bio-pesticide and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) mixture developed by Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth (VNMKV) in Parbhani, Maharashtra. This eco-friendly formulation is designed to enhance plant health by combining beneficial microorganisms that aid in disease and pest management while promoting vegetative growth.
The primary components of Biomix include nitrogen-fixing bacteria and phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and zinc solubilizers. These microorganisms work synergistically to improve soil fertility and nutrient availability, leading to better crop production and quality.
Farmers have reported significant benefits from using Biomix, particularly in turmeric cultivation. Studies indicate that Biomix effectively controls diseases like soft rot and pests such as white grubs in turmeric crops. Additionally, its application has been associated with improved crop quality and higher market value. Beyond turmeric, Biomix has shown positive results in various crops, including ginger, tomato, mango, groundnut, citrus, pomegranate, watermelon, papaya, and legumes like pigeon pea and soybean.
The adoption of Biomix has extended beyond Maharashtra, reaching farmers in Gujarat and Karnataka. Its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly nature make it an attractive alternative to chemical fertilizers, especially for small and marginal farmers. The increasing demand led VNMKV to establish a dedicated production unit, scaling up from 2 metric tonnes in 2010-11 to 675 tonnes in 2017-21, generating an income of ₹9.82 crore for the university.
